As the dust settles on an other eventful April fools morning, PR agencies and marketers across the land can finally begin to count the clicks, views and comments which this years activity has managed to drive for their clients... and we (as the target audience) can finally start to work out what was real and fake!
So as an ancient descendant of the great Archibald "Archie" Armstrong - the instigator of the first ever April fools day back in 1672 - I thought it was only appropriate for me to take some time to review my top 10 favourite bits of activity which I saw online this morning, here goes in descending order....
10. LWC new office in the Alps
According to the post, the team at LWC have been "working around the clock to get operations up and running, and we can't keep it a secret anymore! Introducing our Swiss Alps Depot". All employees (subject to agreeing to change of location) will now be expected to "brave the cold to bring an exceptional selection of beverages to even the most remote chalets and ski resorts". So team LWC, don't forget to grab the ski's before you head to the office tomorrow....
9. The Gym Kitchen - Protein Toothpaste
Healthy ready-meal company Gym Kitchen decided to use 1st April to reveal a new SKU to their health conscious range. The new protein toothpaste is described as the "freshest addition to your morning and night routine" with the goal to make "achieving your protein goals even more effortless with 20g Protein every time you brush". Apparently it's available in all major supermarkets so I'm off to Aldi now to grab some before the hype sells out.
8. Bays Brewery Beer Ice cream
According to it's website, Bays Brewery is a family-run brewery creating exceptional, multi-award-winning beers in the stunning coastal resort of Torbay. This morning they broadcast a new frozen product aimed at those who "love beer and ice cream" with a "secret ingredient that will keep those pesky Torbay seagulls at Bay". Let's hope it doesn't come with a flake...
7. PubQuiz.com presents Pug Quiz
The nations favourite Pub Quiz providers chose to go down a route involving images of Dogs playing quizzes on smartphones (is that even possible?). Apparently there was a grand launch party in Barking last night (where was my invite?) where lots of dogs and humans played the first ever Pug Quiz, and now it's being rolled out nationwide. There were even some genius quiz team names from the event including "Jeremy and Beagle".... Paw-some!
6. Juicy Bricks - Full English Breeakfast
Juicy Bricks claim to be the world's most innovative B2B F&B Innovation agency. Their strapline of "freshly squeezed innovation" was definitely tested to the max for today's release. They claim "through tireless research and some eyebrow-raising R&D experiments, we've cracked the code and are thrilled to introduce 'The Full English Breeakfast Cereal, made with ‘buttery toast’ wholewheat flakes, air-dried pieces of perfectly crisp bacon, tomato and mushrooms… a breakfast experience like no other". Thanks for the idea JB, but I think I'll stick to my morning porridge.
5. Gymbox presents Gym-barx
So after your pooch has done a pub quiz, they can now work out at the gym with you too. Gymbox were "buzzing to announce a new class GYMBARX - where canines and cardio collide". The new class combines strength, agility and endurance and is for dogs of all shapes and sizes where your furry friend will move from station to station as the intensity kicks up a gear each round and features fence jumps, furpees and leash pulls". I have to say the accompanying images of hench hounds is quite terrifying (and off putting)
4. Spirits of Virtue - Glen Dochus Tartan Blend
Allegedly this liquid has spent "years in development and a true taste of innovation, this is the first tartan liquid in the world with a mesmerising tartan pattern that swirls within the bottle". SoV’s Head of Special Projects, April McLoof said “With GD Tartan Blend, we’ve woven the very essence of Scotland into each bottle with a complex profile of heather, peat and a hint of butterscotch". Better still, it's alcohol-free too - I literally can't enter my credit card details fast enough.
3. St Austell Brewery - ice lollies
Another piece of exciting NPD came from the South West today with the launch of brand new beer ice lollies – a beer lover’s new summer essential. According to the brewery "The ice lollies will feature korev, Proper Job and Mena Dhu flavours and can be enjoyed frozen - or if you fancy an ice cold pint, let it melt and enjoy from a glass". Apparently the new lollies will be stocked in freezers at St Austell Brewery managed houses across the South West, available in select retailers and subject to a challenge 25 policy - imagine being ID'd for an ice lolly...
2. Beverley Holidays launches the Red Arrow caravan
Beverley Holidays is a multiple award-winning family-run holiday park in the English Riviera. Today they decided was a great day to take to the sky's (literally) with the launch of their new Red Arrow Caravan! Inspired by the "return of the English Riviera Air show in June, it'll elevate you up high above the holiday park and have you feeling like an air show pilot!". They end the post by asking who fancies a stay? Erm no thanks, I've got vertigo and what happens if I sleep walk?
1.Funkin cocktails - Blue Raspberry farm
And the winner is.... Funkin cocktails! The 90 second video documentary tour of the new blue raspberry farm is hilarious, and a great way to launch their new RTD can. The release claims they're "excited to announce that the FUNKIN COCKTAILS FRUIT FARM has officially opened its doors for one day only - Monday, April 1st, from 8 am to 12 pm". If you were quick enough to get to the secret location today, you would have been the first to pick the oh-so-sweet Blue Raspberries straight from the bush. Check out the video for yourself at https://www.linkedin.com/posts/funkin-ltd_pick-your-own-blue-raspberries-were-excited-activity-7180459158343684096-cRGc?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop
A huge well done, to all brands and agencies who created April fools content this year, there was some great pieces of content and it was very tough to pick out the above 10.
See you next year? I'm off to the gym with my Labrador to do some bench presses.
